Itemize is a browser extension that matches your Amazon orders to transactions in your YNAB budget. It is built so that your shopping and budget data stay on your own computer. This page explains exactly what it touches.
What Itemize reads
- Amazon: your order history, order invoices and, where available, the Your Payments transactions page, on the Amazon store you choose. These pages are read in your browser using your existing Amazon sign-in. Itemize never sees or stores your Amazon password.
- YNAB: through YNAB's official API, with your permission: your budgets, accounts, categories and transactions.
What Itemize writes
Only to YNAB, and only after you approve it: the memo, category and split of the Amazon transactions you choose. Itemize never creates or deletes transactions.
Where your data is stored
Order details, matches, history and learned categories are stored in your browser's local extension storage. They are not sent to us or anyone else. Our server never receives your orders, transactions or budget.
Your YNAB sign-in token is stored encrypted in the same local storage. When YNAB issues a refresh token, the token exchange passes through a small service we run whose only job is to hold the app's YNAB client secret. It forwards the request to YNAB and keeps no logs of tokens or budget data.
Plans and licensing
To keep track of your free week and your license, our server keeps one record per YNAB account. That record holds a one-way scrambled version of your YNAB user ID (we can't turn it back into your ID), when you started, how many free charges you've used, and your license key and status. To identify you, the extension sends your YNAB sign-in token to our server, which asks YNAB for your user ID and then forgets the token. Nothing about your budget, transactions or orders is sent or stored.
Purchases are handled by Dodo Payments, our merchant of record. They process your payment and email you a license key. Our server checks that key with Dodo Payments. Dodo Payments' own privacy policy applies to your payment.
We keep that record for as long as you use Itemize. If you ask us to delete it, we remove your license link and usage counts. We keep only the scrambled ID and the fact that the free week was used, so the free week can't be restarted. That leftover can't be traced back to you.
Our server also counts requests per IP address for a minute at a time to stop abuse. Those counters expire on their own and aren't stored anywhere else.
Launch emails
If you leave your email on our website to hear when Itemize is in the stores, we keep that address and the browser you were using, send you one email when it launches, and use it for nothing else. Ask us and we'll delete it.
What we never do
- We never sell, rent or share your data.
- We never pass YNAB data to any third party.
- We don't use analytics, trackers or ads in the extension.
- We don't use your data to train AI models.
Keeping and deleting data
Everything stays until you delete it. In Itemize, open Settings and choose Delete everything to remove all local data and sign out of YNAB. Uninstalling the extension also removes its local storage. You can revoke Itemize's access to YNAB at any time in your YNAB account settings, under Connected Apps.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
Itemize's use of information received from Amazon and YNAB complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the matching and splitting you see in the extension.
